What is a balanced diet?
A diet containing the right proportions of different nutrition groups in order to achieve the requirement for calories, proteins, materials, vitamins etc
What are carbohydrates used for?
Used as a source of energy for cell respiration
Where are carbohydrates found?
Pasta, Rice, Potatoes
What are fats used for?
Insulation, Energy, protection around delicate organs
Where are fats found?
Olive Oil, fatty meats, cheese
What is protein used for?
Important building block of muscles, bones, and repair tissues
Where is protein found?
Meat
Where is vitamin C found?
Citrus fruits
What is citrus used for?
Used in synthesis of protein to make skin, ligaments and blood vessels
Where is vitamin D found?
Dairy products, egg, fish and fish oil
What is vitamin D used for?
Helps with uptake of calcium during digestion and factor in maintaining healthy bones
What is the defeciency in vitamin D called?
Rickets-causes weak and soft bones abd deformaties. It can cause a stunt in growth for children
Where are mineral salts (calcium and iron) found?
Calcium found in diary products and fish, iron found in red meat and some green vegtables
What are mineral salts (calcium and iron) used for?
Calcium is needed for healthy bones and teeth. iron is present in Hemoglobin and plays an important role is transporting oxegen around body.
What does a lack of iron lead to?
Anemia and tiredness as not enough energy will be produced
Where is fiber found?
Vegtable, Fruit and whole grains
What is fiber used for ?
Not digested thus helps food move through the stomach and intestines. It adds bulk.
Where does water come from?
Drinks and food
What is water used for ?
Acts as a solvent in which chemical reactions occcur. Maintains a constant temperature in the body
What is malnutrition?
Deficiencies, excess or imbalance of nutrients
What is starvation?
Eating too little food, leads to muscle loss, organ damage and eventually death
What is constupation
Lack of fiber, leads to pain, stomach ache and inability to deficate
What is obesity
Eating too much food-leads to diabities, high blood pressure, strokes and heart disease
What is scurvy?
Lack of vitamin C. Leads to bleeding under the skin and around the gums, premature stopping of bone growth in children leading to stunted growth and dry skin and hair
