transport in plants Flashcards
What is the function of xylem
hollowed out dead cells that transport water through plants
What is the function of phloem
transport sugar and food nutrients
Where is water taken up
root hair cells by osmosis
how are root hair cells adapted
large surface area-increase rate of osmosis and ion uptake, thin wall-distance for diffusion is shorter
What is transpiration
Loss of water vapour from the mesophyll cell surface due to evaporation. Exits via stomata.
How does the plant prevent water loss
Closes the stomata to prevent water vapour diffusing out
How is water drawn up the xylem
transpiration pull as water molecules are cohesive
What affects the rate of transpiration
Temperature and humidity
How does temperature affect humidity
On warm days which is hotter, the transportation is high as water evaporates more easily
How does Humidity affect transpiration
Higher humidity results in lower transpiration as the concentration gradient is lower
What is translocation
movement of materials from source to sink
What is source in translocation
Areas where amino acid and sucrose are produced. Occurs in ploem vessles
What is sink translocation
Where materials are stored or used for respiration and growth.
What are the materials being translocated used for
Respiration and growth
What is produced in the leave during translocation
