what is fitness?
fitness is the ability to do physical activity
what is health?
health is being free from diseases such as bacteria and viruses
how is your general level of fitness measured?
cardiovascular fitness
how do the following nutrients listed below help our body?: carbohydrates and fats, protein, vitamin, minerals, fibre, water
carbohydrates and fats for lots of energy, protein for growth and repair, vitamin to prevent scurvy, minerals such as iron to make haemoglobin, fibre to prevent constipation, water to prevent dehydration
what can obesity lead to?
heart disease, arthritis, diabetes and breast cancer
what are the following made up of?:
carbohydrates
proteins
fats
carbohydrates are made up of simple sugars
proteins are made up of amino acids, fats are made up of fatty acids and glycerol
what causes kwashiorkor?
when the belly swells up due to a lack of protein. This is because with the very little protein in their blood, their body cannot absorb excess water from body tissues and their abdomen swells up with the water.
what 3 factors will affect an EAR?
- age because of different rates of growth and repair
- pregnancy, because the foetus will be growing
- breast- feeding, need to provide food
what are proteins needed for?
growth and repair.
what does EAR stand for?
estimated average requirement
what is EAR measured in?
g = 0.6 x body mass in kg
what are plant proteins called?
second class proteins as they do not contain all the essential amino acids
proteins from meat and fish are… and what do they contain?
called first class proteins. They contain all the essential amino acids that cannot be made by the human body
how do you work out if a person is overweight or underweight
calculate their body mass index (BMI)
what is the equation for this?
BMI= mass in kg divided by (height in m) squared
