controlling plant growth Flashcards
what are auxins?
a group of plant hormones that move through the plant in solution (Liquid)
what are auxins involved in?
phototropism and geotropism
where are auxins made?
in the root and shoot tip
where is the most auxin found in a plant?
the shady part of shoots
what will a higher amount of auxin increase?
the length of cells
what are plant hormones used for name 3?
as rooting powder to increase root growth of cuttings, to delay or accelerate fruit ripening to meet market demands and as selective weed killers
what is phototropism and geotropism?
phototropism is where the plant grows in response to light and geotropism is where the plant grows in response to gravity
what part of the plant is positively phototropic?
the shoot
what part of the plant is negatively geotropic?
the roots
what happens if a plant receives higher amounts of auxin?
the length of the cells will increase on the shady part causing curvature of the shoot towards the light
why do plant have roots?
so they can find more water in response to gravity
why would a plant want to grow toward light?
the leaves will get more light and produce more food for photosynthesis
what is negative phototropism?
where plants grow away from light
what would happen if you removed the tip off the shoot of a plant?
it would stop growing
what 2 operations does applying plant hormones do?
speeds up or slows down the rate of growth/ripening
