Human Genomics (5) Flashcards
What is the genome?
The genome of an organism is its entire hereditary information encoded in DNA.
What is the genome made up of?
The genome is made up of genes and other DNA sequences which do not code for proteins.
What is Genomic Sequencing?
It is the process of determining the sequence of nucleotide bases for individual genes and entire genomes.
What can be used to identify base sequences in Genomic Sequencing?
Computer programs.
What is Bioinformatics?
The use of computer technology and statistical analysis to compare and identify nucleotide sequence data.
How do computer programs identify gene sequences?
They look for:
Coding sequences that are similar to known genes
Sequences that contain start codons
Sequences that lack stop codons
Base sequences which correspond to the amino acid sequence of a particular protein.
What can be done with the computer data?
It can be analysed, managed and shared by scientists worldwide.
What is pharmacogenetics?
Pharmacogenetics is the use of genome information in the choice of drugs for patients.
