Q

What are ‘NIMBY’s?

A

(Not In My Back Yard)’s are people who reject the concept of renewable energy changes to take place near where they live because they think it will negatively affect them (e.g. noise, obstruction of landscape)

Q

What was the Climate Change Act 2008?

A

This was a key piece of British legislation that legally commits the UK to become net-zero on carbon emissions by 2050. The government work towards this pledge by setting regular carbon budgets and implement policies to drive change. An example of this was the 2035 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles.

Q

What are some of the justifications of choosing Purbeck as our location for our Fieldwork Investigation?

A

– Interesting demographic; a high % of wealthy and elderly people.
– Large population size; population of approx. 9,000 allows for easy data collection
– Local planning permission for an offshore wind farm was denied; suggests locals are knowledgable about the pros & cons of renewable energy.

Q

What was the mitigation for the two risks from our Human Fieldwork Investigation?

A

– Students mostly conducted questionnaires in pedestrianised zones, away from traffic.
– Students completed the questionnaires in groups of 3 and students had the school mobile number in the event of an emergency. Students practiced introducing themselfs politely and respectfully.

Q

What are some examples of secondary data used in the Human Fieldwork Investigation?

A

– Satellite images of properties in Swanage to identify % of solar panel use.

Q

How did we present the ‘closed question’ data from our questionnaire?

A

Bar charts, Pie charts, and Stacked bar charts. This visually represented our data allowing us to quantify how much local support there was for renewable energy.

Q

What is a limitation of our data presentation?

A

Didnt allow us to incorporate the use of our open questions as it was difficult to present a large quantity of qualitative data, which we underused in our analysis.
