Eastbourne Flashcards
Where was Eastbourne?
Sussex, South coast
Where is eastbourne?
On the coast of the South East of England
Why did they do the coastal management scheme (Eastbourne)
-Protect the town from waves and coastal flooding.
-Old groynes badly damaged and ineffective, loss of beach shingle due to winter storms, sea wall unstable due to undermining, sea level rise threatening flooding in the town
Advantages of Eastbourne
-Tourist numbers increased to 5 million, earning the local economy £130M a year
-The strategies protect homes, reducing insurance costs
Disadvantages of Eastbourne
-Dredging of shingle has damaged sea floor habitats
-Beach shrunk as the groynes have stopped longshore drift of shingle
What was Eastbourne Shoreline Management Plan?
-1 million tonnes of shingle added to beach: absorb wave energy
-94 timber grounds rebuilt using tropical hardwood: prevent longshore drift and the movement of sediment up the beach
-Sea wall repairs: withstand force of waves
-Rock armour: protects cliffs from being undercut, easier and cheaper than sea walls
How many groynes are at eastbourne?
94
How much did the shoreline management plan cost in total?
£30 million
list the 3 hard management strategies used at eastbourne?
Groynes, Sea wall, Rock armour
List the soft management strategy used at eastbourne?
Sand regeneration. The county council pumped 1 million tonnes of shingle onto the beach to rebuild the natural barrier to absorb wave energy. This improved the beach and boosted the tourism industry in eastbourne.
What is an advantage of hard management strategies like sea walls, groynes, and rock armour?
Sea walls- will withstand the force of waves and deflect the energy out to sea, protecting the town.
Groynes- will stop the movement of sediment going up the beach as they mitigate long shore drift
Rock armour-will absorb the energy from the waves, protecting the town, like sea walls but a lot cheaper.
Whats a disadvantage of hard management strategies like sea walls, groynes, and rock armour?
Expensive, work against the environment, obstruct the view.
What are the two main types of hard engineering at Eastbourne?
Sea wall
Groynes
What is the main industry in Eastbourne?
Tourism
