Eastbourne Flashcards
Where was Eastbourne?
Sussex, South coast
What was Eastbourne?
A coastal management scheme
Why did they do the coastal management scheme (Eastbourne)
-Protect the town from waves and coastal flooding.
-Old groynes badly damaged and ineffective, loss of beach shingle due to winter storms, sea wall unstable due to undermining, sea level rise threatening flooding in the town
Advantages of Eastbourne
-Tourist numbers increased to 5 million, earning the local economy £130M a year
-The strategies protect homes, reducing insurance costs
Disadvantages of Eastbourne
-Dredging if shingle has damaged sea floor habitats
-Beach shrunk as the groynes have stopped longshore drift of shingle
What was Eastbourne Shoreline Management Plan?
-1 million tonnes of shingle added to beach: absorb wave energy
-94 timber grounds rebuilt using tropical hardwood
-Sea wall repairs:
withstand force of waves
-Rock armour:
protects cliffs from being undercut, easier and cheaper than sea walls
