Human Elective - Population Density & Distribution Key Words Flashcards
Ageing Population
Where there are more adults than children in the country/region. Number of elderly people increases. Migrant workers are needed to fill the jobs that older people have retired from as the country does not have enough younger people to fill these jobs.
Birth Rates
The number of live births per thousand of a population
Death Rates/Mortality Rates
The number of deaths per thousand of a population
Demographic Transition Model
Shows the changes in birth and death rates in an industrialised country. Also called the population cycle
Dependency Ratio
Ratio between non-working population (children and elderly) and the working population
Fertility Ratio
The average number of babies born to women during their reproductive years. Also called the Total Fertility Rate
Least Developed Countries (LDCs)
Poorest countries of the world. GNP is low, life expectancy is low, poverty is high, disease is common
Natural Decrease
Difference between birth rates and death where death rates are larger
Natural Increase
Difference between birth rates and death rates, where birth rates are larger
Population Cycle
Model which shows the changes in birth and death rates in an industrialised country. Also called the demographic transition model.
Population Density
The average number of people living in a square kilometre of land
Population Distribution
The spread of population across a region
Population Dynamics
Changes we see in population growth and age/gender structure
Population Explosion
The rapid growth of a population due to agricultural and medical improvements
Population Pyramid
Model which shows the age/sex structure of a population at any given time or place
