Brain Drain
Where a country/region loses its educated and qualified people as they migrate for better paid work in other countries/regions
Carrying Capacity
The number of people that a region can support with its basic resources e.g food
Deforestation
The clearing of large areas of forest for fuel/construction and to clear for farming/mining, roads, settlement
Depletion of resources
The overuse of resources e.g. water
Desertification
The spread of desert sand onto damaged soils. The soils are over cropped or overgrazed and lose their structure, easily washed away or blown away.
Optimum Population
The population that can exist in a region and enjoy a good quality of life without destroying the resources or degrading the landscape
Overcultivation
When soil is damaged by too many plants being planted in an area. The soil continuously being farmed each year and not allowed to lie fallow/unused or fertilised to return to return the lost nutrients
Overgrazing
Occurs when soil is damaged by too many animals grazing on it. Animals eat all the grass and their hooves trample the soil damaging its structure.
Overpopulation
Occurs when the number of people in a region is greater than the carrying capacity of that region of that region. i.e. people cannot be provided with the basic resources needed for survival.
Primary Health Care
First level healthcare provided to the community for people. e.g. visiting a gp for advice or treatment

Large region in North Africa that runs from east to west across the continent. It is located south of the Sahara Desert and North of the Savanna grasslands
