Heart Disease
Top cause of death in the US; examples athersclerosis, myocardial infarct, congestive heart failure

A degenerative disease of arteries
Cancers
second leading cause of death; most lethal: lung cancer; second lethal: cancer of the sex organs; frequency of cancer increases between the ages of 50 and 80
Chronic Pulmonary Disease
Third leading cause of death; most caused by COPD from cigarrette smoking
Stroke
cerebral vascular accident (CVA); caused by injury to an area of the brain due to vascular obstruction or bleeding into the brain; more common in older adults and commonly present with weakness of one side of the body or difficulty with speech
Trauma
caused by accidents is the fifth leading cause of death
