human Bio chap 7 Flashcards
Describe the function of the lymphatic system
The lymphatic system collects excess interstitial fluid from tissues and returns it to the bloodstream
Describe the structure of the lymphatic system
A network of thin-walled vessels similar to veins that transport lymph
Explain the origins and components of lymph.
lymph originates from interstitial fluid that leaks from blood capillaries, is then collected by lymphatic vessels
List the two ducts return lymph to the blood system and how they will assists in fluid homeostasis for the body
- thoratic duct- transports lymph to circulatory system, collects lymph from below thorax
- Right lymphatic duct- Transports lymph into circulatory system , from right arm and right side of body.
List the primary lymphatic organs
bone marrow and thymus
List the secondary lymphatic organs
lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils, and adenoids.
Describe the difference between lymph nodules and lymph nodes
Structure- lymph NODULES are small, non-encapsulated clusters of lymphoid tissue. and lymph NODES are larger, encapsulated structures with simple architecture
Location- lymph NODULES are primarily found in mucosal tissue, lymph NODES are distributed throughout the body.
Function- lymph NODULES play roles in immune response, lymph NODES play a role in immune responses and help functioning in filtering lymph fluid.
List examples of the body’s innate defenses
- nonspecific
- fully functional without previous exposure to a pathogen
-physical and chemical barriers - inflammatory respose
Summarize the primary and secondary innate
primary- involve immediate physical and chemical barriers, cellular defenses and inflammatory responses.
Secondary- Recruitment of additional immune cells through cytokine signaling, actions of dendritic cells to enhance the overall immune response.
Summarize the first and second line of defense against pathogens.
Primary- Physical and chemical barriers to prevent pathogen entry.
Secondary- innate immune responses that respond to and eliminate pathogens that bypass the first line.
explain the progression of inflammation and its role of fighting off infection
recruitment of immune cells to combat infections. It helps contain pathogens, facilitates their destruction, and initiates tissue repair, playing a crucial role in the body’s overall defense mechanisms
Explain the role of the complement system
acts as a bridge between the innate and adaptive immune responses
enhancing opsonization, promoting inflammation, lysing pathogens, and facilitating the clearance of immune complexes
