what are the functions of the skeleton
support, movement, protection, storage, red blood cell formation
what type of bone is densely packed and good at transmitting force in one direction
compact bone
what type of bone is light and spongy and composed of criss-crossing fibres that all run in different directions.
cancellous/trabecular bone
what are long bones
bones that are longer than they are wide.
what are short bones
bones close to equal width and length
what are flat bones
bones that are flat and usually used for muscle attachment or protection
what are irregular bones
this is an umbrella term for bones that don’t seem to fit into any other category. they often have foramina (holes)

the skull, spine, sternum and ribs

the appendicular system is mostly composed of the limbs

8 carpals, 5 metacarpals, and 14 phalanges (only 2 in the thumb)

7 tarsals, 5 metatarsals and 14 phalanges
what is the pectoral girdle made up of
the clavicle and scapula
what makes up the pelvic girdle
2 hip bones, the sacrum and the coccyx
