HUBS 191 Lecture 1 Flashcards
what is a tissue
a collection of similar cells and cell products that perform a limited number of specialised functions
what is an endocrine gland
a gland that produces hormones that regulate distant organs in the body
what is an exocrine gland
exocrine glands are responsible for the secretion of substances onto the bodies surface through ducts
what are 4 functions of epithelial tissue
- provides physical protection from the environment
- controls permeability
- provides sensation
- produces specialised secretions
what are some examples of connective tissue
blood, lymph, bone, cartilage and adipose tissue (fat)
what are some functions of connective tissue
establishes a structural framework for the body - transports fluids and dissolved materials - protects delicate organs - supports, surrounds and interconnects other types of tissue - stores energy in the form of triglycerides - defends the body from invading microorganisms
what is the most common type of tissue
muscle tissue
what is the least common type of tissue
nervous tissue
