A blood pressure above 130/80
How do we treat it?
ACE, Arbs, Calcium channel blockers, diuretics, and beta blockers
What life style changes do you want to make when you have it?
Cut sodium and water, exercise, weight reduction, decrease smoking, reduce stress, decrease alcohol consumption
When should you take your medications?
In the morning
What assessment findings relate to HTN?
S/S, orthostatic, tachycardia, stress, and sedentary lifestyle
Priority outcomes for patient outcomes
Verbalize the individualized plan of care, lifestyle changes before implementing drugs, encourage adherence to the plan of care (don’t stop taking it because you start to feel better), buy ABPM device to check levels at home, report adverse drug affects
What’s important to know about HTN, what should you tell the patient about it?
Can cause atherosclerosis, PAD
Signs and Symptoms of HTN
Mostly asymptomatic, headaches, facial flushing, dizziness, fainting, nosebleed, chest pain, blood in urine, pounding in chest/neck/ears
How to access your pt with HTN
History: review risk factors, as well as history or CVD, current use of drug therapy or illicit drugs
Physical: obtain blood pressure in both arms, 2 or more readings a visit, take orthostatic
Diagnostics: test kidney (BUN, protein or blood in urine, serum creatine levels), EKG
What does HTN affect the body
Cause stroke, MI, kidney failure, and death
HTN goals
Lower BP, make lifestyle changes, diet changes, medicine, and check BP at home
