What is HRM?
an integrated set of processes, practices, programs, and systems in an organization that focuses on the effective deployment and development of its employees
Why should all managers/ supervisors have a background in HRM?
- they must require knowledge and understanding of HRM and how practices influence the success of the organization
- managers should be aware of the issues in the external environment- which can help or hinder the organization to achieve its goals
What are the HRM functions
- recruitment and selection
- training and development
- performance evaluation
- compensation-> rewarding employees
What are the factors in the external environment that influence HRM?

What is the effect of globalization on HRM?
when managers go global they must deal with the issues related to different geographies, cultures, laws, and business practices
HR must identify capable managers who live and work overseas, design training programs that enhance the managers understanding of foreign cultures and work practices, and adjust compensation plans to ensure pay is fair and equitable across diff regions with diff costs of living
How does technology effect HRM?
advancements in tech. have enabled orgs. to improve processes, reduce costs, and improve quality
technology is changing the way that orgs. do business
MAKES HR PRACTICES MORE EFFICIENT
Why do orgs. have an HR department?
their job is the ensure that the business is getting the most out of its employees
for guidance and coordination of employees
What is business strategy?
firms working plan for achieving its vision, competing effectively, and optimizing financial performance
What is the link between strategy and HRM strategy?
HR strategy should be align with business strategy to enhance competitive advantage through knowledge, skills, and abilities of people
HR strategy should drive business strategy
What is human capital?
skills-> what you bring to the company. skills experience ect.
Do smaller companies have HR department?
a lot of small companies do not have a HR department but instead have 1-2 individuals who deal with HRM initiatives.
