Organizational culture
A system of shared ASSUMPTIONS, VALUES and BELIEFS that show employees what is appropriate and inappropriate behavior.

Mechanistic, 2 characteristics and 2 advantages and disadvantages
- Tall structure, highly formalized and centralized
- Communication tends to follow formal channels
- Employees are given specific job descriptions delineating their roles and responsibilities
- Rigid and resist change, unsuitable for being innovative and taking quick action
Advantages:
- Efficiency
- When the environment is stable - maximize efficiency and minimize costs
- Advantageous for new ventures - new businesses often suffer from a lack of structure, role ambiguity and uncertainty
Disadvantages
- Lower innovativeness
- Lower self-determination
- Less own motivation on the job
Organic structure, 3 characteristics, 2 advantages, 1 disadvantage
- Flat, flexible, decentralized, low formalization
- Communication lines are more fluid and flexible
- Employee job descriptions are broader and employees are asked to perform duties based on the specific needs of the organization at their own expertise levels
Advantages:
- Entrepreneurial behavior and innovativeness
- Higher levels of job satisfaction on the part of employees
Disadvantages:
- No clear rules
