When an officer utilizes a firearm or another potentially deadly weapon for self-defense; the defense of others; or
to apprehend or prevent the escape of a suspect, who the officer reasonably believes has committed a forcible and atrocious violent felony.

When officers are involved in or witness an incident in
which they believe excess force may have been used by
any peace officer, they (should/shall) immediately report
the incident to a CHP supervisor and submit a report

Supervisors and managers are responsible for ensuring that:

(1) Proper, thorough, and accurate reporting procedures
are followed.
(2) An investigation is conducted and documented.
(3) These guidelines are followed whether such incidents involve an allied agency, CHP personnel, or both.
(4) Investigations of incidents involving allied
agencies shall be coordinated at the appropriate Division level.
The contents of this chapter (should/shall) be reviewed by
all uniformed employees at the rank of sergeant and below
on a quarterly basis.

Uniformed employees should not place their finger on the trigger of any firearm during a tactical situation except under
the following circumstances.

(a) When actually firing the firearm.
(b) When the firearm is pointed at an identified target and the use of deadly force is justified.

do not allow allied to interview involved CHP until CIIT consulted,
should utilize the Departmental Employee-Involved Shooting Incident
On-Scene Guidelines
