how was the Armada defeated? Flashcards
English tactics:
the English had faster ships and more experienced and skilled commanders
fireships broke their formation of the fleet and made individual ships vulnerable to attack bombardment by the English cannons made regrouping impossible
Spanish mistakes:
Spanish ships were designed for the Meditterean- could not deal with harsh English conditions and the North sea
delayed in the Netherlands- soldiers were not ready to board weapons were for land use- they were defenceless at sea- they brought the wrong cannonballs
the weather:
storms delayed their return to Spain- their food and water went off/ ran out and many sailors were too sick to sail
storms caused great destruction to the fleet
