Essex had an argument with her
he turned his back on her he nearly drew his sword and so was placed under house arrest
Elizabeth sent him to Ireland to deal with a rebellion- he didn’t defeat the rebels and he agreed a truce with them- against E’s orders
Essex went into the Queen’s chambers- saw her without her wig
his sweet wine monopoly was not renewed- he lost his wealth and influence
Essex had nothing to lose- started to gather supporters and plot a rebellion

what happened on 8th February 1601?
he took 4 Privy Councillors hostage and marched them to his London house with 200 supporters
Robert Cecil called him a traitor
some of Essex’s supporters left and others panicked and released the hostages
Essex and the remaining followers were arrested
what were the consequences of the rebellion?
Essex was put on trial and sentenced to death
he agreed to name other rebels (his sister Penelope)

25th February 1601 in private
what happened to some other supporters?
some other supporters were killed but most were just fined
