Q

what does the posterior superior alveolar block achieve? where inject? what are the risks?

A

anaesthesia of:

  • 18, 17, 16 (minus mesiobuccal cusp)
  • buccal gingiva of these teeth

inject buccal to the 7/8, just below the zygomatic arch (cheekbone) at 45 degree angle using only 16mm (half long needle)

highest risk of haematoma so aspirate!

Q

what does the inferior alveolar nerve block achieve? where inject?

what are the risks and how treat?

A

anaesthesia of:

  • all lower teeth on one side
  • soft tissue mesial of molars
  • soft tissue lingual to molars
  • half of tongue

inject 1cm above the occlusal plane of the lower 7, lateral to pterygomandibular raphe medial to coronoid notch.

approaching from the contralateral premolars

risks are trismus and treat with muscle relaxants and NSAIDS
