how science works Flashcards
cause-and-effect
Research can show that 1 factor actually causes a change in behaviour (effect).
falsification
One cannot prove whether a theory or hypothesis is true. One can only prove that it is false, a process called falsification.
replicability
whether a particular method and finding can be repeated with different/same people and/or on different occasions, to see if the results are similar.
objectivity
all sources of bias are minimized and that personal or subjective ideas are eliminated.
induction
Induction starts with our experience of the world and proposes explanations based on these experiences.
deduction
Deduction starts with two statements (known as ‘premises’) and uses logic to reach new conclusions based on those statements.
standardisation
process to establish norms and uniform procedures.
