How has the Earth’s atmosphere changed over time and why? Flashcards
What is the current atmosphere of the Earth?
78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% other gases including 0.040% of carbon dioxide
Over how many years has earth developed?
4.54 billion years old
How has the earth’s atmosphere developed over time?
1) The Volcanoes released the gases that formed the atmosphere ( one of the gases was water vapour and the volcanoes released huge amounts of carbon dioxide )
2) The atmosphere contained methane, carbon dioxide, and water vapour
3) As the earth cooled, the water vapour condensed to form the oceans
4) At some stage , some of the carbon dioxide dissolved in the oceans to form a weak acid
5) Volcanoes also released other gases. These included Nitrogen which gradually built up in the atmosphere
6) development of primitive plants could photosynthesized removed carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and added oxygen.
