Norman chapel - shows people were coming to the site for religious purposes- it was small though so likely only to have been used by
Elite people.
The carvings tell us about beliefs at the time-mermaid.
Sally port in the chapel - shows people thought there was a risk of being attacked and they needed a way to escape during a siege.

Tudor period- we can tell that the castle was used as a Way to show off the wealth and the power of the prince bishops.
Their crests/coat of arms were everywhere
Bishop Tunstall added in a gallery to show off and for his guests to exercise and see his treasures.
He also added a gun loop though showing that there was still some risk of rebellion in the north.
But most of the changes were designed to show the wealth of the prince bishops.

Victorian Period- we can tell that education was growing.
Castle given to the University to support education in the North as Durham is the first Northern uni.
The keep is rebuilt to
accommodate the students. The stain glass window is added to celebrate the 50 year anniversary. Therefore, we can tell that education was growing in the region.
