How ezymes work? Flashcards
What are enzymes?
-> biological catalysts that speed up chemical reaction
-> made of protein
-> have active site that binds to the substrate
lock & key model
the active site and substrate have complementary shapes.
induced fit model
The active site changes shape slightly to fit the substrate.
Enzyme-substrate complex
-> temporary bond between an enzyme and its substrate
-> allows the enzyme to change the substrate.
Product formation
The enzyme breaks down the substrate into products.
Factors affecting enzyme activity
-> temp
-> pH
-> Substrate concentration
-> Enzyme concentration
Temperature
Enzymes have an optimum temperature at which they work best.
pH
Enzymes have an optimum pH at which they work best.
Substrate concentration
As substrate concentration increases, reaction rate increases until the enzyme becomes saturated.
Enzyme concentration
As enzyme concentration increases, reaction rate increases.
