Gas Exchange In Plants Flashcards
Gills
made up of gill filaments and lamellae (tiny, thin plates that increase the surface area for gas exchange)
How gas exchange works in fish
Water flows over the gills, and oxygen diffuses from the water into the blood in the lamellae
Countercurrent flow
Blood and water flow in opposite directions across the lamellae, which maintains a concentration gradient and maximizes oxygen uptake.
Diffusion
Net movement of mol from region of higher conc to lower conc down a conc gradient until equilibrium is reached.
Facilitated diffusion
diffusion that takes place through protein channels.
Osmosis
Net movement of mol from region of higher water potential to lower water potential across a partially permeable membrane, down the water potential gradient.
