Why was the Saar Plebiscite a success for Hitler?
- propaganda success for HITLER who increased its International impact by ‘Promising to make no further claims on French territory, thereby giving up German claims to Alsace and Lorraine.
This improved his international image by presenting himself as a reasonable man who wanted justice for the Germans suffering from the Treaty.
What was the profit made in the German coal-mines in Saar used for?
To pay for reparations to France. This was seen as a great injustice because the people of Saar were being denied their rights whether they wanted to be a part of Germany.
Stages of Saar:
1919- Saar removed from Germany, under the LoN control. Profit from coal mines used for reparations. Unjust to Germans no longer part of Germany.
1933 - Hitler’s opponents hid in Germany – fought for Saar to remain under the League.
1935- LoN held a plebiscite. 90% to 10%.
Victory for Germans as it portrayed the Nazis as representing the Germans in a fight against the Treaty.
Germans who lived outside Germany showed their hate for the Treaty and love for Germany.
