Totalitarian government characteristics
- Ideology: glorifies aims of the state, justifies acts of the government .
- State control of Individuals: demands loyalty, denies basic liberties, expects personal sacrifice for state.
- Methods of enforcement: police terror, indoctrination, censorship, and persecution.
- Modern technology: mass communication to spread propaganda, advanced military weapons.
- State control of society: business, labor, education, religion, arts, personal life.
- Dictatorship and one-party rule: exercises absolute authority.
- Dynamic leader: unites people, symbolizes government.
Characteristics of communism:
Abolishing private property
all means of production under state ownership and control
central planning of how resources are used
production and distribution of goods controlled by state
state provides work and compensation according to the capabilities of every individual.
Characteristics of Fascism:
- cultural: censorship, indoctrination
- economic functions controlled by state
- political: nationalist, racist, one-party rule, supreme leader
- examples: Italy, Spain, Germany
Similarities of Fascism and Communism
Both are anti-democratic
both promote extreme programs of social change
dictators impose totalitarianism
a party elite claimed to rule in the name of national interest
Differences of Fascism and Communism
Communists want international change, Fascists want nationalistic change
Communists focus on industrial and agricultural workers, Fascists work with wealth business men and owners.
Communists are LEFT WING (seek to destroy traditional institutions and class distinction. Fascists are extremely RIGHT WING because they favor upper class members of society.
What is Left Wing and Right Wing?
Left wing: ideas such as freedom, rights, equality, progress, internationalism.
Right wing: authority, hierarchy, order, tradition, nationalism.
