How can we protect the earth Biodiversity Flashcards
Types of Biodiversity
-chemical
-ecosystem
-species
chemical diversity
a way to measure diversity of human health and welfare
ecosystem diversity
the number of different ecosystems on earth or in a geographical area
species diversity
number and variety of species in a particular region
bioprospecting
-The process of discovering commercialization of indigenous knowledge of biological resources
-White people stealing and profiting off of indigenous people remedies without giving credit
2 hypotheses explaining why biodiversity decreases toward the poles:
1.The greater age of the ecosystem in the tropics provide more time for speciation
2.The greater energy the tropics receive from the sun vs. the lesser energy input in temperate and polar regions
*Sunlight is the key to plants and there is more near the equator meaning there is more animals
*more species closer to the equator
Threats to Biodiversity
-Habitat loss
-Overharvesting
-Exotic/Invasive Species
-Climate Change
Habitat Loss
species no longer have a habitat available, and has adapted to be living in there (it can’t survive)
-Habitat fragmentation- habitats can be fragmented into patches that are too small to support species
-Habitat degradation: habitats can be degraded by pollution to the extent that they are no longer livable
Overharvesting
Not the same as hunting…ex;fish
exotic/invasive species
when species evolve alongside one another…They’re adaptations allow them to deal with the others presence
climate change
a drastic form of habitat degradation or loss (ex; polar bears and the loss of sea ice due to melting)
Ways to Protect Biodiversity
-Conscious decision making: consumer choices, follow hunting regulations, reduce carbon footprint
-Support conservation in preserves: ex; visiting a state or national park in the U.S, your supporting conservation and preserves because your entrance fee goes toward its protection
-Support habitat restoration: reintroduce once endangered species into their native habitat…protect the habitat so its available for the species to be reintroduced to it
Support zoos/aquaria: zoos and aquariums have captive breeding programs…the breeding programs allow scientist to increase population numbers of endangered species
