Hotel room- Stanza 3 Flashcards
“The frontier”
. Metaphor
. The city streets are being compared to the primitive and barbaric frontier of the American wild west
. Just as the frontier of the wild west is unforgiving, barbaric and uncivilised so too are the city streets relentless, violent and lacks humanity
. This is effective as it suggests that once the darkness envelops the city it descends into chaos, brutality and the loss of civility as normal acceptable behaviors disappear
“never somewhere else”
.Enjambment
.This is effective as it emphasises the word choice of the speaker and stresses the speaker’s belief that violence is always present even in civilised society and it is inevitable. This highlights that uncivilised behaviour cannot be dismissed as being elsewhere, and it is present even in somewhere as modern as New York City.
“no stockades”
“midnight”
