Assisi- Stanza 3 Flashcards
“rush of tourists”
“clucked”
“clucked contently”
. Alliteration
. This is effective as it emphasises the bustle of the tourists movement and suggests the sound of their clicking cameras as they view life through a certain lens which obscures their view. Therefore not allowing them to see the truth or the pain of the beggar because they are focused on the wrong thing.
“fluttered”
“scattered”
“the grain of the Word”
“they”
. Connotations of distant, disconnected and separate
. This suggests that the speaker is disconnected and separate from he mindless group of tourists and purposefully distances himself from the mob. It also highlights how the speaker can comprehend the irony of the situation
“passed”
“ruined temple”
“outside”
“whose eyes wept pus”
.Connotations of obvious suffering, rotting & slowly being destroyed
.This suggests
“whose back was higher than his head, whose lopsided mouth”
“Grazie”
.Connotations of grateful, politeness, purity & appreciation
.This suggests that despite the tragedies and suffering the beggar has faced he is still grateful for any small act of kindness he receives. This demonstrates his innocence and politeness and humbles the reader with his gracious nature he exhibits despite having to live with his deformity. It highlights the beggars inner beauty and purity which reclaims his humanity.
“a voice as sweet as a child’s when she speaks to her mother”
.Simile
.The angelic voice of the beggar is being compared to a voice of an innocent child
.Just as a child’s voice is innocent and pure so too is the voice of the beggar virtuous, sweet and beautiful
.This is effective as it makes clear that the beggar is truly beautiful on the inside despite his morbid deformity on the outside. This highlights the beggars purity, morality and kindness towards others, and compares the beggar to an angel which and pure and free of immoral acts
“St Francis”
.Word placement
.This is effective as it emphasises the true focus of the poem which makes clear that despite the beggar being deformed he is perfect in the eyes of God. However, the priest only truly serves capitalism. The beggar embodies the true message of the church which the priest and those who blindly follow him consistently miss. The message is overlooked and lost in the corruption and hypocrisy of the church.
