Q

“Swish…clearer”

A

. Metaphor
. The water once the murky dust has settled is being compared to the encounter between the shark and the speaker
. Just as the once murky and dusty water becomes clearer so too does the truth of evolution become clearer to the speaker due to the encounter with the shark
. This is effective as it emphasises that, because of his experience with the shark, the speaker can know clearly understand his position within the process of evolution. It highlights how the encounter has revealed a truth to him, and how the initial disruption has ultimately caused clarity and realisation within the speaker.

Q

“slime”

A

. Connotations of ooze, unevolved and origin
. This suggests that everything, humanity and the shark, comes from the same basic starting point; a primordial ooze which births all life. It highlights a very early stage of evolution which was only a mucky ooze of unevolved potential which later formed humanity as we know it, as well as nature. It also emphasises that human beings aren’t truly superior to other forms of nature as we all come from the same origin.
