What are deserts? (2)
Deserts are place s in the world that are very dry/arid and very hot. They are large areas covered with sandy soil with little vegetation cover.
What is the average temperature day to day in a desert?(2)
During the day: Up to 50°C
During the night: As low as 6°C
What happens in a desert during the changing of the seasons and why? (3)
The temperature remains the same throughout winter and summer (1)- hot (1), because there is very little rainfall throughout the year (1).
How have plants adapted to survive in the desert? (3)
They have adapted by:
• Storing water in their leaves
• Losing as little water as possible
• Staying as cool as possible
How have animals adapted to survive in the desert? (5)
They have adapted by:
• Burrowing into the ground to help stay cool.
• They are nocturnal, which means that they come out at
night when it is cooler.
• They are light in colour to reflect the sunlight.
• They have long ears to help loose heat.
• They get the water they need from the plants that they
eat.
How do people in the desert live? (2)
They are nomadic, and never stay anywhere permanently but rather move about. (1)
However, if they find a source of water, they may make a permanent home there.(1)
What do people in the desert wear? (7)
Long, flowing robes protect them from the sun and from sand, and allow air to reach the body. (4)
Headgear shields the head from the sun, and also protects it from blowing sand.(3)
What is an oasis? (1)
A place in the desert where there is water.
Why would a person who lives in the desert decide to live permanently near an oasis? (2)
So that:
• There is a source of water (1)
• Crops can grow(1)
What would a desert person build their house out of, why and where would they build it? (3)
Mud and rock (1), to keep the house cool in the day and warm in the night (1). Near an oasis (1).
