Sporting impact - advantages
A
- raises the profile of the sport - may lead to increased participation
- new or upgraded venues are built
- the event can focus on minority sports which may increase participation
- increase in funding in the sports involved
- the event can bring increased sponsorship + commercial income for individuals + governing bodies

Sporting impact - disadvantages
A
- 1.4 million more people are playing sport than 2005 but this increase came in 2 short bursts (after the London 2012 winning bit in 2005 + around the 2012 games themselves). The current trend is a gradual decline in participation
- new facilities can end up not being used after the event
- lesser known non-global sports can suffer eg squash
- sports deviance is likely to be highlighted by media at global sporting events

Social impact - advantages
A
- more money is brought into the city or country which can be used to benefit the local population
- events can give pride to the host nation or city + can help with ‘national-building’
- improved use of sports facilities by local communities
- can improve transport systems
- accommodation built for the sporting event can be used by the community eg London

Social impact disadvantages
A
- some areas of the county may not get the same benefits as the host cities
- some areas of the host country do not benefit from improved infrastructure + transport
- local inhabitants may have to vacate land being used for sporting venues

Economic impact - advantages
A
- increase income leads to positive economic impact. More money is brought to the host city by those who participate or spectate
- more jobs are created through the building of facilities, transport infrastructure and support for the event
- increase in tourism = related economic benefits during + post events
- commercial benefits related to goods sold in the area of the event + event related goods

A
- bidding to host an event can be expensive eg the failed 2018 FIFA World Cup bid estimated coast £21 million
- events can cause an overall economic loss
- benefits to employment + long term jobs are often exaggerated
- if events or participants are linked with failure it can lead to loss of revenue in merchandising sales

Political impact - advantages
A
- individual political parties and their leaders can gain credit and therefore more votes if a bit is successful
- staging an event can bring unity + a sense of purpose to the county
- the county or city can be used as a ‘shop window’ for its culture = raising its status in the eyes of the world

Political impact - disadvantages
A
- if cost is too high or over budget its can be a political disadvantage leading to losing votes + decreasing economic resources
- if something goes wrong (eg a terrorist attack) politicians have to shoulder responsibility
- if the host nation does poorly it can reflect badly on the host nations
- negative environmental impacts can decrease political popularity
- if legacy of event is negative it can be politically damaging
- protests by athletes or spectators can be embarrassing
