Too much pressure on athletes to succeed
positive impacts on society
•Gives a sense of identity or pride in their country/ patriotism and brings people together = nation building. ‘Feel good factor’ for the population and may lead tosocial integration and cooperation with a possible lower local crime rate
•Legacy:
- health & fitness awareness
- increased participation, leading to a healthier society
- improved infrastructure / transport / accommodation.
•Money through tourism, investment etc. - can be spend in the local community.
•Volunteering opportunities
•Appeasement people enjoy the global games experience
negative impacts on society
•People may be displaced/disrupted by the development required.
•During the event, local prices and pollution may increase
•Focus and investment given to the event rather than long term local issues,
•The benefits may not be relevant or felt by the majority of local people, Benefits, such as improved transport or better sporting facilities might only be felt by the minority living locally to the games, this could also lead to areas of country being resentful.
positive economic impacts
•Increased income to the host country (sponsors + tourism)
•Improved economy due to employment opportunities. Increased revenue from income tax for economy
•Can raise the status of the country on the global stage= shop window effect, as only the positive parts of the
country are shown through the media = more trade, tourism and investment.
negative economic impacts
•The bidding process. Bidding for a global sporting event is very expensive and if it’s not won, then no money coming back in.
•The cost of new facilities and running a Global sports event can cost more than is raised in revenue.
•Increase in taxes to local people to fund the event
•There are limited long term job opportunities as the economic benefits to employment of hosting a global sporting event can be exaggerated as many jobs are temporary and dry up after the event
•If events/participants are linked to failure or deviant behaviour, then sponsors can be negatively affected
positive political impacts
•Symbolic-successtul host can make a government appear successful. Political parties and their leaders can gain credit and therefore more votes if a Global Games goes well, i.e., runs smoothly with no controversies or organisational hitches. This is emphasised if a host country’s athlete’s or team are successful
•Employment opportunities may improve government popularity (votes)
•Can bring unity to the country and a sense of purpose which is good for the government = nation building. Staging
a Global Games can bring unity to a country, with political differences put aside.
•The country or city can use the event as a ‘shop window for their culture and commerce and therefore raise the country’s status in the eyes of the world, thus hopefully attracting more trade and investment which can help the popularity of a ruling political party
negative political impacts
•If the cost of the event is seen to be too high (including the bidding process) or goes over budget, then this can reflect badly on the ruling party decreasing their popularity and number of votes they receive.
•If something goes wrong, then this can again reflect badly on a ruling political party costing them popularity and votes.
•Negative environmental impact increased litter, carbon emissions, more pollution etc. due to a Games can decrease political popularity.
•A host Nation doing badly in the sporting can reflect badly on the ruling political party.
•A negative legacy of a Global Games such as lower than expected participation rates or underused facilities, can reflect badly on the ruling political party.
