why is gambling on contemporary sport a concern

A

•There are concerns over this increase in sports betting (both legal and illegal). One concern is the danger that people who gamble becoming addicted to sports gambling and fall into financial difficulties, even perhaps going bankrupt.
•Furthermore, gambling has become problematic in the world of contemporary sport because it can be linked to match fixing, bribery and illegal sports betting and these are deviant and present a serious threat to traditional sporting ethics, as Illegal gambling scandals bring occurrences on the sports field into question. It clouds the integrity of sporting achievements or results in a similar way to illegal drug use or doping.

Some of the concerns of illegal gambling are:

A

• Transactions undeclared so costing governments millions of pounds in lost tax revenue
•Illegal gambling can damage / put out of business legal bookmakers
•Illegal betting syndicates are becoming increasingly involved in match fixing)
•Sports people sometime choose to become involved or are coerced (forced) in match fixing by bribery.
• Sometimes criminals who are involved in illegal betting and match fixing.

Risks to illegal gamblers:

A

•No official records so bookmaker may refuse to pay out if set to lose a lot of money
•Unregulated. A wronged ‘punter’ cannot go to the police to complain as its illegal in the first place. - debt.
•Punters may be enticed, to bet on sports events that have been fixed, so they have no chance of winning
•Illegal betting syndicates are ruthless and extreme when collecting gambling debts owed - violence.
