What effects can the passage of time have?
- Increases basic human needs
- Reduces anxiety, stress or emotion
- Increases rationality
- Allows time for development of rapport and trust
- Reduces expectations
What are the three aspects of Stockholm Syndrome?
- Positive feelings of the victim towards the hostage taker
- Negative feelings of the victim toward the authorities
- Positive feelings of the hostage taker towards the victim
What should a surrender plan cover?
- Where the subject will exit the stronghold.
- Dogs to be locked up.
- Doors to rooms left open.
- Lights to be left on.
- What order occupants will come out in.
- What they are to do with weapons.
- What they are wearing (no big, baggy clothing)
- What they will hear or see when they are out.
What is an ‘Instrumental situation’?
Situation where a substantive demand to authority.
What is a ‘Substantive demand’?
- A demand of high value to the subject
- Demand that can’t be easily achieve
eg Policy change
Person of authority
- Prime Minister
- Parliament Minister
- Police Commissioner
- CEO
What is an ‘Expressive Situation’?
Emotionally drive with substantive demands
Offensive threat
Threat made by the subject to apply pressure on authority to comply with specific demands.
“If I don’t get a gate away car in five minutes, someone is going to die.”
Defensive threat
Threats made by the subject for the sole purpose of keeping Police at bay.
“If anyone tries to come in here, I’ll kill these kids!”
“Don’t come any closer or I will jump.”
