What is PNT’s vision?
“Influence through communication”
What does the ‘Tui’ in the PNT logo represent?
- Known as the chatterboxes of New Zealand birds
- Are friendly, inquisitive, full of life and sometimes confrontational
-Tui are considered to be very intelligent,
eloquent and can replicate complex speech
-The Tui has a double voice box - enabling its vast range of vocalisation – enabling them to change pitch and intonation
What does the ‘pattern’ on the Tui’s wing in the PNT logo represent?
Represents PNT’s partnership with AOS colleagues from the ‘Wahaika’ pin
What does the ‘Stars’ in the PNT logo represent?
Southern Cross: Reflects New Zealand - and therefore our mission to be the safest country
How many PNT squads are in New Zealand?
17 in total:
Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua, Gisbourne
New Plymouth, Whanganui, Palmerston North, Wellington
Nelson, Greymouth, Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin, Invercargill
When should PNT be used?
- In the resolution of high risk situations
- PNT should also be considered in any other instance where it is believed a trained negotiator will be of assistance to Police in the performance of their duties.
What are the three negotiator squads?
- PNT (Police Negotiation Team)
District PNT - APNT (Advanced Police Negotiation Team)
Enhanced capability for major incidents (sieges, hostages, terrorist, kidnapping etc). - IRF (International Response Team)
Supports internal/external agencies such as Police Executive, MFAT. Made up of APNT members.
Incidents which warrant PNT deployment?
Armed Offenders Suicidal people (incl via comms)
Search warrants
WTA’s
Kidnap for ransom
Unarmed barricaded offender(s)
Cell extractions
People in crisis/mental distress (incl via comms)
Hostage situations
Terrorist incidents
issues motivated groups or individuals (protests)
Any other situation that my be resolved by negotiation
Assisting Corrections Service (MOU in place)
Firearms should not be used by any PNT member unless:
- Authorised by Incident Controller
- The O/C AOS is aware of their location
- Identifiable to other Police as PNT
- ALL mandated PITT has been met
