Hormones of Endocrine System Flashcards
how is the pituitary gland broken down?
into the Anterior Lobe and the Posterior Lobe
name the 5 hormones secreted in the Anterior Pituitary:
-thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
-prolactin
-growth hormone (GH)
-follicle stimulating hormone
-luteinizing hormone
describe the horomones actions in the Anterior Pituitary:
-thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH): stimulates secretion of Thyroid Hormones
-prolactin: milk in breasts
-growth hormone (GH): mitosis, differentiation and growth of tissues/bones
-follicle stimulating hormone: corpus luteum in ovaries, testosterone in testes
-luteinizing hormone: helps menstrual cycle, testosterone production in testes
name the 2 hormones of the Posterior Pituitary:
antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and oxytocin
describe the hormones of the Posterior Pituitary:
-antidiuretic hormone (ADH): water retention by kidneys
-oxytocin: feelings of sexual satisfaction, emotional bonding, labor contractions, milk release
what hormones are in the Thyroid Gland?
T3 + T4 and Calcitonin
describe the hormones of the Thyroid Gland:
-T3 + T4: increases metabolic rates in cells
-Calcitonin: stimulates osteoblasts to build bone and decrease blood calcium levels
where are the cells of the Parathyroid Gland found?
Chief Cells
describe the hormone of the Parathyroid Gland?
stimulates osteoclasts to breakdown bone, acts on kidney cells to absorb calcium to increase blood calcium
