Antidiuretic hormone
from hypothalamus, stored in anterior pituitary. Helps control blood pressure by allowing more water to be reabsorbed into the kidneys
mineralocorticoids (aldosterone)
comes from adrenal cortex and stimulates kidneys to regulate blood Na and K levels by saving sodium from urine while increasing the release of K from urine. MADE IN ZONA GLOMERULOSA
glucocorticoids (cortisol)
comes from adrenal cortex; participates in stress response. Increases nutrients that are available in blood. CORTISOL INCREASES BG. MADE IN ZONA FASCICULATA.
Prolactin
ant. pit. hormone. release triggered by PRH, inhibited by PIH from hypothalamus. Causes milk production and mammary gland growth in females.
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone
ant. pit. hormone. Release triggered by Corticotropin RH from hypothalamus. Causes release of corticosteroids by adrenal cortex.
Follicle-stimulating hormone and Lutenizing hormone
a gonadotropin released by ant. pit. In females this regulates ovarian development and secretion of estrogen and progesterone. In males it helps with sperm development and secretion of testosterone.
Oxytocin
made by hypothalamus and stored in ant. pit. Uterine contraction, ejection of milk, emotional bonding
Hormones of adrenal cortex
Mineralocorticoids (aldosterone). Glucocorticoids (cortisol) Androgens (male sex hormones)
glucagon
secreted in pancreas alpha cells. Raises bg by causing liver to convert stored glycogen into glucose.
insulin
secreted in pancreas beta cells. Lowers bg by allowing sugar to enter cells
pineal gland releases
melatonin for circadian rhythm.
calcitonin
secreted by parafollicular cells. Lowers blood calcium levels.
parathyroid hormone PTH
released by parathyroid. raises calcium levels.
gonadocorticoids
sex hormones made in adrenal cortex. Androgens/Testosterone. Made in ZONA RETICULARIS
erythropoietin
kidneys release this in response to low blood oxygen and it increases red blood cell production.
