hormones and homeostasis Flashcards
high blood glucose levels
insulin is secreted by beta cells, stimulating liver and muscle cells to absord glucose and convert it to glycogen. other cells are stimulates to absord glucose and use it in cell respiration instead of fat, thereby lowering the blood sugar levels
low blood glucose levels
glucagon is secreted by alpha cells, stimulating liver cells to break down glucagon into glucose.
type 1 diabetes
inability to produce enough insulin, genetic
type 2 diabetes
lifestyle related. insulin insensitivity.
thyroxin
thyroid gland, almost all cells in the body are targets. regulates the body’s metabolic rate.
leptin
secreted by adipose cells, target teh hypothalamus. contributes to teh lack of appetite and feeling satisfied. leptin binds to the receptors in teh membrane of cells causing long-term appetite inhibition.
