Horace - Omens good and bad Flashcards
impios parrae recinentis omen ducat
Let an omen of a hooting owl lead the wicked
et praegnans canis aut ab agro rava decurrens lupa Lanuvino
and the pregnant dog or a tawny she-wolf running down from the land of Lanuvium
fetaque volpes;
and a pregnant fox;
rumpat et serpens iter institutum,
And let a snake interrupt the started journey,
si per obliquum similis sagittae terruit mannos:
if coming from the side like an arrow, it terrified the horses;
ego cui timebo providus auspex
for whom I am worried about, I, a prophetic augur
antequam stantes repetat paludes imbrium divina avis imminentim,
before the bird divinely inspired of imminent rain-storms can return to the stagnant marshes,
oscinem corvum prece suscitabo solis ab ortu.
I will conjure up with a prayer a prophetic crow from the rising of the sun.
sic licet felix, ubicumque mavis,
May you be happy, wherever you prefer [to go]
et memor nostri, Galatea, vivas,
and mindful of us [me], Galatea, may you live,
teque nec laevus vetet ire picus nec vaga cornix
and may neither an unlucky woodpecker prevent you to go, nor a wandering magpie.
