Hoof Flashcards
Stratum medium
Horn (stratum corneum) produced by coronary epithelium
Stratum internum
area where laminar epidermis (stratum germinatium) interdigitates with laminar dermis (corium)
White line
Line formed by the junction of the hoof wall with the sole
Sensitive lamellae
Stratum germinativum + dermis (corium)
Insensitive lamellae
Stratum corneum (dead)
Sole
concave portion between hoof wall and frog. non weight bearing
angles of the sole
area of the sole that fits into the angle of the heel - prone to developing corns
bars
where hoof wall turns cranially and the palmar end of the foot, the bar is the portion of the hoof wall extending cranially
bar forms the abaxial wall of the paracuneal groove
frog
caudal wedge shaped portion of the palmar/plantar surface - has four parts:
two crura, apex, and central groove/sulcus
the crura form the axial wall of the paracuneal groove
Bulbs
caudal expansion of frog crura, covered by peripole
Digital cushion
collagenous and elastic tissue used to dissipate shock
provides a pumping action to return blood to the foot
A nail through the apex of the frog (cranial)…
may enter the navicular bursa.
A puncture through the base (palmar)…
may enter the digital cushion and will puncture the DDF tendon associated with the tendon sheath, which can lead to an infection of the digital tendon sheath.
Proper term for frog
cuneus ungulae
proper term for lateral cartilages
ungual cartilages
