Homeostasis: Thermoregulation Flashcards

1
Q

Why can sweating not take place when it is humid?

A

the body can’t get sweat to evaporate as there is already moisture in the air, preventing sweat from moving into that place.

Q

Distinguish between vasodilation and vasoconstriction.

A

Vasodilation is the relaxation of smooth muscle around vessel walls which results in the widening of blood vessels, allowing an increased blood flow. Vasoconstriction is the constriction of smooth muscle around vessel walls which results in the thinning of blood vessels, only allowing a decreased blood flow.

Q

What is shivering? How does shivering raise body temperature?

A

Shivering is the involuntary and rapid contraction/relaxation of muscle brought about by great coldness. This movement creates heat, and since no work is being done by the muscles, it is released as heat, generating heat in the body.
