Homeostasis Flashcards
define: homeostasis
maintenance of a constant internal environment within narrow limits (despite changing internal/external envs)
How is homeostasis maintained?
through signal transduction
Generally in animals, the ____ system detects changes in homeostasis, while the ____ responds to changes in homeostasis
nervous system
endocrine system
define: stimulus, receptor, message, effector, response
Stimulus: change in an internal or external environment
Receptor: specialised cells that detect changes and send info to control centre (eg. signal reception)
Message: evaluates change and sends hormonal or nerve message to effector (ie. signal transduction and subsequent steps)
Effector: tissue or organ that responds (ie. where, and what happens)
Response: the corrective action taken to achieve homeostasis (ie. cellular response which amplifies/opposes stimulus)
define: positive feedback
when the original stimulus is amplified away from the normal value.
define: negative feedback
when the response counteracts the initial stimulus
