Homeostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
The maintenance of a constant internal environment
What four main things need to be controlled?
Ion content
Water content
Sugar content
Temperature
How is ion content regulated?
By the kidneys
Ion are taken into the body In food, then absorbed into the blood
If a food contained too much of an ion the excess are removed either in sweat or through the kidneys which remove excess from the blood and get rid of it in urine
In what ways is water lost from the body?
Through skin as sweat
Via lungs in breath
Via the kidneys as urine
What happens on a cold day or when you’re not exercising?
you don’t sweat much so you’ll produce more urine which will be pale
What happens on a hot day or when you’re exercising?
You’ll sweat a lot so will produce less urine and it will be more concentrated
Lose more water through breath when you exercise because you breath faster
How is body temperature controlled?
Enzymes work best at a certain temperature (37 in humans) so this is the temp you body tries to maintain
A part of the Brain acts at a thermostat its sensitive to blood temperature at the brain and receives message from the skin aswell about skin temperature
How are blood sugar levels controlled?
Eating foods containing carbs puts glucose into the blood from the gut
The normal metabolism of cells removes glucose from the blood but if you do lots of vigorous exercise then more glucose is removed
A hormone called insulin helps maintain the right levels of glucose in your blood so cells get a constant supply of energy
