Homeostasis Flashcards
What series of ranges make up homeostasis?
-blood pressure
-temperature
-blood oxygen levels
-blood calcium levels
If the levels move outside the normal homeostatic ranges the body will attempt to correct this
What does homeostasis control?
-ensures that the body’s internal environment remains constant despite changes inside and outside the body
-its a dynamic state of equilibrium
-and necessary for normal body function and life
What is negative feedback?
The process the body uses to reverse the direction of movement away from homeostasis
What is positive feedback? Give an example
-The process the body uses to increase the movement way from homeostasis
-oxytocin stimulates uterine contractions
What is tissue repair?
-the process that replaces worn-out, damaged, or dead cells
-new cells originate by cell division from the storm, the supporting connective tissue, or from the parenchyma
What do parenchymal cells accomplish?
-the repair, tissue regeneration is possible, and a near-perfect reconstruction of the injured tissue may occur
What is fibrosis?
-If fibroblasts need to come in to repair the tissue, they synthesise materials that aggregate to form scar tissue
What is a large part of the internal environment of the body made up of?
fluid surrounding body cells called interstitial fluid
What 2 feedback systems mainly controls the body?
- the nervous system, which detects changes from the balanced state and sends messages in the form of nerve impulses to organs that can counteract the change
- the endocrine system corrects changes by secreting molecules called hormones into the blood
How is temperature regulated in the body?
as muscular tissue contracts it also produces heat (thermogenesis), which is used to maintain normal body temperature
What are the 4 principal routes of heat loss from the body to the environment?
- radiation
- conduction
- convection
- evaporation
