Homeostasis Flashcards
Homeostasis
The state of steady internal body conditions maintained by living systems despite external changes
How is homeostasis achieved?
Negative Feedback
Change detected → body triggers coordinated response → change is reversed
Negative Feedback
A detected change away from a set level produces a response that reverses the change
Thermoregulation
Homeostatic regulation of internal body temperature
Temperatures death will occur at
> 42 → death
< 26 → death
What detects a change in external temperature?
Thermoreceptors in the dermis of the skin
Vasoconstriction of Arterioles
Reduces blood flow to the skin to reduce loss of heat
Vasodilation of Arterioles
Increases blood flow to skin to dissipate excess heat
