Cell Structures Flashcards
Cytoplasm
Liquid gel in which many of the chemical reactions take place
Ribosome
Site of protein synthesis
Golgi
Site of modification of proteins
ER (endoplasmic reticulum)
Network of membranes that allow movement of chemicals and proteins within cells
Cell Membrane
Selectively permeable membrane that controls movement of materials in and out of a cell
Lysosome
Small vacuole containing enzymes to break down old cell parts + large molecules
Cytoskeleton
The support structure within a cell
Mitachondrion
The site of aerobic respiration to release energy in ATP from glucose
Nucleus
Contains genetic information (DNA) which codes for proteins
Chloroplast
The site of photosynthesis in plant cells. They are filled with chlorophyll and use light energy to produce glucose
Vacuole
Keeps the plant cell turgid. It is filled with sap and stores food, water, and waste.
Cell Wall
Stops plant cells from bursting or collapsing, depending on the cell’s water content
Organelles
Structures within a cell that each have different functions
Key structural difference between plant + animal cells
Animal cells don’t have a cell wall to maintain their size and structure as they lose water. Animal cells shrink but plant cells become flaccid
