Homeostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis
The condition of equilibrium in the body’s internal environment, achieved by the constant interactions of the body’s main regulatory process
What do negative feedback loops do
Reduce an effect
What do positive feedback loops do
Increase an effect
What are freeforward loops
Physiological responses in anticipation of a change in variable eg, HR increasing prior to a running race
What is a reflex response
A reflex response requires knowledge from an integrating centre and a circuitry that connects the receptor and effector
It relies on chemical or neurotransmitter signals
What are local homeostatic controls
They allow individual parts of the body to self regulate their responses to certain conditions
