Healthy eating guidelines
Eat plenty of diferent coloured fresh fruit and vegetables. 2. Choose wholegralin bread, cereals, pasta
and rice, instead of white. 3. Choose low-fat products when possible, e.g. low-fat milk, cheese and

yoghurt. 4. Choose fresh lean meats, chicken and fsh instead of processed meats, e.g
sausages. Choose healthy cooking methods where possible, e g baking or steaming instead of frying.

Avoid foods with a high salt content eg rashers. 7. Drink two litres of water per day

Hidden sugars are added sugars disguised with less well-known names and in products where you would not expect to find them,even though the product doesnt taste sweet e.g tomato pasta sauces in a jar

Energy
The body needs energy for all it’s functions and tasks eg digesting food, breathing, sleeping and
walking Inside the body, the foods we eat are broken down to create heat and energy
Measuring Energy
The amount of energy provided by food is measured in kilocalories (kcal) or kilojoules (KJ)
Energy balance
The basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the basic amount of energy the body needs to keep the body’s
organs functioning while at rest. . Extra energy is then needed for any activities we do, such as

walking, running or cycling. . Energy balance is when energy input (food) = energy output. . When this
balance is maintained, people’s body weight remains healthy, A healthy body weight is one very
important factor for good health
Factors influencing energy requirements
Age,Gender,Climate,Weight,Pregnancy,Activity level
